Polyrec® GFM

Glass Filter Media

What is GFM?

Polyrec® GFM Glass Filter Media is an excellent replacement for silica filter sand with more efficient filtration capacity without the need of additional investment into infrastructure in your existing pool system. GFM is also resistant to biofilm build up and wormhole channeling commonly found in pool filters.

GFM is an engineered product manufactured from glass bottles, predominantly green and amber, processed to obtain the optimum particle effective size and shape. Locally manufactured machinery produce Polyrec GFM; it undergoes a three step process which includes crushing, sterilisation and screening to achieve the desired filtration specifications.

The unique sub-angular shape of GFM interlocks the filter bed preventing mud balling and channeling of unfiltered water. Green and amber glass contain metal oxides used in the colouring process of bottles. These metal oxide catalysts dissociate oxygen and water to create a zone of high oxidation potential to prevent bacteria growing on the surface of GFM.

Your benefits in a bottle

  • Glass media is specifically graded to suit all pool filters. There is no need for additional infrastructure.

  • Substantially lowers chlorine oxidation demand by up to 50%.

  • Green and amber glass have hydrophobic properties allowing for higher filtration efficiency and reducing biofilm build up.

  • GFM glass filter media reduces the need for many backwashes and the time spent doing so.

  • Glass is an infinitely recyclable product.

  • Provides a quick ROI (return on investment).

Why is biofilm a problem in household pool filters?

In addition to being a great filtration medium, silica sand is an ideal habitat for bacteria. Although bacteria are necessary for biofilters and slow bed sand filters, they can lead to a biodynamic mechanical instability in the performance of rapid gravity or pressure filters. By releasing an alginate jelly, bacteria adhere to the sand. The bacteria have a place to live and are even shielded from chlorine oxidation by the coating that the alginate creates. The issue is that, particularly in the summer, the alginate binds the sand together and obstructs the bed. This difficulty is solved by Polyrec® GFM.

INSTALLATION GUIDE

  1. Empty the current filtration media in your pool filter

  2. Fill the filter water until the half way mark, this is to prevent any damage to the lateral fingers.

  3. Pour the glass filter media into the filter.

  4. Turn the setting to "rinse''.

  5. Set to backwash for 3 to 5 minutes or until water is clear.

  6. Begin filtration.
